Canada’s Ostrich Dilemma: Culling Flu-Immune Birds That Could Save Global Poultry

💡 BREAKING SCIENCE CONFLICT: The CFIA has ordered a cull of Canadian ostriches that SURVIVED H5N1 avian flu – birds whose antibodies could revolutionize outbreak prevention. Why destroy nature’s blueprint for immunity? They have survived H5N1 and therefore have natural antibodies against this infection. As a result the eggs they produce (80 eggs per year at 2 kg each) naturally contain these antibodies. They have been raised as IgY research birds and now could really show the benefits of this technology by potentially producing useable antibodies to prevent infection in other egg producing flocks.

URGENT PARADOX: As a leader in IgY antibody technology (with the world’s first approved veterinary IgY drug and a Phase 2 trial for human C. difficile infection), I know firsthand how valuable these ostriches could be. Instead of culling them, we should be studying their immunity and potentially saving millions of chickens and stabilizing egg prices.

GLOBAL STAKE: Destroying them could waste a rare scientific opportunity to protect poultry (and humans) from future outbreaks. RESOURCES:
